The real driver: weaving hours
These products are handwoven. Labour is the dominant cost, and labour scales with the surface area of cane actually woven and the complexity of the pattern across it. This explains the apparent contradiction above: the large USD 15 box has a metal-framed upholstered fabric lid, replacing a big woven panel with a fabric one. Less weaving, lower price, bigger box.
The four levers you control
Lever 1: pattern complexity
Simple weave is the baseline. Double weave adds material and time but buys rigidity. Diamond pattern takes considerably longer and demands more consistent cane. Cane pattern sits between. Moving a body from diamond to simple weave and keeping diamond only on the visible face is the single most effective cost reduction available, and it costs almost nothing in perceived quality.
Lever 2: interior treatment
A Regency fabric lining adds material and an assembly step. Necessary when the basket is displayed open, wasted when it is not.
Lever 3: leather
Genuine Grade A leather handles, hinges and strap closures carry real cost. The two most expensive models in the range, the USD 50 two-tier hamper and the USD 45 basket with inner tray, both carry leather and lining. They are also the two that sell on presentation.
Lever 4: finishing
Natural finishing is the floor. Custom colour finishing adds a process step and adds protection against mould and termite damage. For a dry destination market it is a style choice; for a humid one it is insurance.
